Common
questions.
Group Mode, wake times, refunds, mods, regions — the stuff we get asked the most. If yours isn't here, shoot us a message.
Billing & rentals#
What's Group Mode? How's it different from a normal rental?▸
Group Modeis the default. You buy a bundle of play time (12, 24, 48, or 100 hours), drop the wake link in your group chat, and the server only runs while someone’s actually online. When the last person logs off, it hibernates a few minutes later and billing stops with it — your bundle just waits there. Anyone in the squad can wake it back up; nobody needs an Ember account to click the link.
Always-onrentals are still here too — flat 3, 7, or 30 days, runs 24/7. Use that one if you’re running a public Discord server. Group Mode is the better fit for a friend group.

Is the free 12-hour trial really free?▸
Yes, genuinely free — no card, no auto-charge, no payment method on file. One per account. Sign up with a real email (we don’t accept disposable inboxes — you need it to receive your server credentials and dashboard link), pick the 12-hour Group Mode bundle for any live game, and click Activate free trial. The server boots, you play for 12 hours of squad-time, and that’s it. After that it’s yours to extend if you want to keep going, or just walk away.
What happens when my free trial runs out?▸
Same as any Group Mode bundle hitting zero. We email at 80% used and again at 95% so it’s not a surprise. When the meter hits zero the server hibernates, the world save sits there for 90 days, and anyone in the squad can top up from the dashboard to keep playing — paid top-ups extend the same server, same world, same connect address. If nobody tops up, the snapshot expires after 90 days and you lose nothing in the meantime.
When does Group Mode actually charge me?▸
Only when the server is running. The clock ticks down by the minute while someone’s connected; the moment it hibernates, the clock stops. Smaller bundles (12h, 24h) hibernate after 5 minutes of nobody on; larger ones (48h, 100h) wait 10. You can also pause manually from the dashboard whenever — useful if you know the squad’s done for the night.
What happens when my Group Mode budget runs out?▸
We email you twice on the way down — once at 80% used, once at 95% — so it’s not a surprise. If nobody tops up, the server hibernates and the world save sits there for 90 days waiting for you to come back. No auto-charge, no surprise renewals.
Can I get a refund on unused time?▸
Within 24 hours of buying, if you’ve barely touched the server, yes — email us. After that, rentals are short enough by design that we don’t refund partial use, but if something genuinely went wrong on our end we make it right. The full policy spells it out.
How do I top up?▸
From the dashboard. Pick a bundle, pay, minutes show up right away. You can also turn on a share link so anyone in the squad can chip in without needing your dashboard URL.
Do you charge while the server's hibernated?▸
No. Group Mode billing freezes the second hibernation kicks in. Always-on rentals tick against their calendar window either way, but hibernation itself is always free.
Performance & infrastructure#
Where are your servers?▸
Hetzner Cloud, with US East (Ashburn), US West (Hillsboro), and three EU sites (Nuremberg, Falkenstein, Helsinki). Pick whichever’s closest to your group at checkout — it’s the biggest single thing you can do for ping.
What hardware do I get?▸
Depends on the tier you pick. The smallest is 3 vCPU and 4 GB; the biggest jumps to 16 dedicated vCPU and 64 GB on Hetzner’s CCX line for wipe-day Rust loads. Each tier card on the pricing page shows the exact specs underneath the slot count.
How fast is wake-from-hibernation?▸
Most games come back in 60–90 seconds. Rust is the slowest because the world has to repopulate; expect about 3 minutes there. We send the email the second the server’s actually accepting connections, not when we hope it will be. If wake takes longer than 3 minutes, an SLA credit lands automatically.
What happens when something breaks on your end?▸
We credit the time back. Wake takes longer than 3 minutes, server’s unreachable when it should be up, provisioning fails — credits land automatically, no support ticket needed. We notice before you do, and the dashboard shows every credit we’ve issued.
Am I sharing the box with other customers?▸
No. Every rental is its own dedicated VM — your CPU, your RAM, your disk. Nothing’s oversubscribed.
Server admin#
How do I admin the server?▸
Rust and Minecraft give you full RCON — credentials hit your inbox the moment the server’s ready, and they live on the dashboard too: rename, password rotation, restart, the lot. The other games (Valheim, Vein, Windrose, 7 Days to Die) don’t expose RCON, so live admin runs through each game’s in-game console (your account is the admin by default). The dashboard still handles rental management — connect info, hibernate/ wake, snapshot recovery — for every game.
Can I install mods or plugins?▸
Depends on the game. Minecraft Paper takes plugins out of the box. Rust takes Oxide/uMod through RCON. Everything else is vanilla for now — modded variants are on the roadmap. If you have a specific mod or pack you want, drop us a message and we’ll see what we can do.
What happens to my world when the server hibernates?▸
We snapshot the entire disk — world, mods, configs, the lot — before shutting the VM down. Wake restores it byte-for-byte. You won’t lose progress between sessions, and you won’t even notice the cycle once you’re back in.
Server's acting weird — can I restart it?▸
Yes. The dashboard has a Rebootbutton that power-cycles the VM without touching the disk. For Rust and Minecraft you also get save / kick / say commands through RCON, so most things don’t need a full reboot.
Can I change the server name or password later?▸
For Rust and Minecraft, yes — the dashboard has Server name and Server password fields; type the new value and the game restarts in the background, no re-provision needed. For Valheim, Vein, Windrose, and 7 Days to Die there’s no RCON, so the credentials emailed at provision are what stays on that server for the rental. If you need to rotate them, message support and we can arrange a re-provision.
Account & games#
Which games are live right now?▸
Rust, Minecraft, Valheim, 7 Days to Die, Vein, and Windrose. Minecraft Paper, Counter-Strike 2, Palworld, and ARK: Survival Ascended are on the roadmap. The games page has the up-to-date list.
Will you add the game I want?▸
Probably. Send us a message with the title and how you’d use it. We rank the roadmap by what people actually ask for, so a few requests for the same game move it up fast. Every request gets a reply.
What's a wake-share link?▸
A URL you can hand to your friends so they can wake the server without needing your dashboard. Set a use limit and expiry if you want; you can see who used it last from the dashboard.
Can the rest of the squad help run things?▸
Sort of. There’s one billing owner per rental — but the dashboard URL is shareable with co-admins, the wake link lets everyone start the server without you online, and group top-up lets friends chip in to keep the bundle going. So one person pays, the squad runs it.
How do I cancel?▸
There’s nothing to cancel. We don’t store payment details between rentals — every rental is one-shot, and once it ends, your account just sits idle. Want us to delete your record entirely? Email us and we will.
What does Ember track about me?▸
Three third-party scripts run on the site: Cloudflare’s anti-bot analytics, Google Ads gtag (so we can tell whether our ads work — fires once on a purchase), and Microsoft Clarity (heatmaps + session recordings, so we can see where the UI is confusing). That’s the lot.
Your server’s IP, your dashboard, your configs — none of that leaves our infrastructure except through Stripe (for the payment) and Resend (for the emails we send you).
We don’t sell or share anything. Block the scripts in your browser if you’d rather — the site still works, you just stop helping us figure out what’s working. Full details in the privacy policy.
